There is a detailed discussion elsewhere on this forum about the XV750R (chain drive 750) street bike, which was a Japan-only product. There was discussion that it was this bike which was imported to the US and modified for flat-tracking. In short, yes, a 750 top end on XV920/TR1 engine cases. Not a conversion of 750 shaft drive engine cases to chain drive.

Actually, we're both wrong. The chain-drive 750 is a XV750E. The SE is what UK called the 750 virago.

Those are better pics than were in the Cycle mag article which has been posted elsewhere.
Still don't know how many 750E's were imported to the US to make them legal for AMA racing - or why the team pulled out at the end of that season.

According to the Badgerraceing folks(flat track promotor and Yamaha dealership owner).All the folks he new put 750 cyclinders on TR1bottem ends. Now they are limited to 600CCs(at least here in Wisconsin) But theres no chain on the XV pictured. the bike in the turn is not the XV, and how old is this article anyways,20 plus. I like the carb set up and that breather on the front cam cover.VroomVroom

Yea the one in the turn is not it, but the two bottom ones are. I notice that first of trying to get a better peak at the muffler setup. Looks big.

Yep no chain, must of busted it.

Shifter is on the wrong side too but that was a Europe thing. Didn't know they did it in Japan.

Though probably good for dirt track.

What a trip! I read this post yesterday, and found this on ebay today! I guess this is almost proof of the elusive 1981 XV750E.

It's for the Brochure, not the real bike.

its probaby someone who has to take their bike to a shop and pay hundreds of dollars to get their bike fixed instead of having the vast amount of knowledge that is offered on this forum,that allows us Vgo owners to do most all of our own repairs cheaper and easier,imo,,,,,,,,,,,,,,thanks to all of the great people on this forum that help everyone no matter how big or small the fix is,i salute you Beers

In the early 80's yamaha tried their hand at flat track with 750 top ends on the 920rh bottom end. They were never sucessful with effort and after they moved on they sold off about 50 of these engines though the classified ads in cycle news. I dont know if other people made their own flattrackers.

So it would seem Yamaha qualified the 750 chain drive motor for AMA racing by either importing 750 kits for the 920 cases - or importing 750E motors only.
Given the crank weight differences between 920 and 750 I'd guess that importing complete 750E motors only would have been more satisfactory.
The only way to tell which way they went is to find one of these motors and see what numbers are on the cases - anyone know someone with one?

I talked to an engine builder who worked on the the 750 flattrack motors years ago. He said they were getting over 100 horse power out of the motors, but had problems with the engine cases handling that kind of power. He said you could actually see the cases flexing on the dyno! This was one of the reasons the project was abandoned.
